For Rubens Barrichello, deputy leader of the Formula 1 championship, the scandal at the Singapore Grand Prix last year could have been avoided if Piquet had talked to his father, the triple champion Nelson Piquet. In an interview with the "stars" from TV Globo, Rubens said dialogue was missing when the Renault driver then received a controversial order to hit on purpose in order to benefit from Spain's Fernando Alonso.
- I think I missed a bit of dialogue. The Nelson himself said he had embarrassed to talk to the father. If I had spoken, Nelson Piquet could have driven him not to do.
The controversial case involving the Renault came to light Aug. 30 when the commentator for TV Globo Reginaldo Leme revealed that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) was investigating the accident of Nelson Piquet Grand Prix in Singapore in 2008, a fact crucial to the Fernando Alonso's victory. Flavio Briatore, the former chief of staff, would have sent the Brazilian beat of purpose on lap 16. The board of the FIA banned Briatore Formula 1. Renault was suspended for two years, but only need to fulfill the punishment if returned to commit another offense. Piquet and Alonso were acquitted.
On Sunday, Nelson Piquet said Renault would sue if it does not make a formal apology.
